While Stockholm might be a youngster compared to the Vikings it is nonetheless located in the heartland of the Swedish Viking realm. Take a trip with us and meet the Vain Vikings of Runriket having put their eternal marks on the scenery.

Our quest to locate the Vain Vikings of Runriket leads us to the northern suburbs, where we find the Viking Jarlabanke. A confident and ambitious man, and one of the very few people ever to raise a runestone (or five) in his own honour (more modest people waited for others to do it after they were dead), his runestones claim, among other things that he was the sole owner of a rich and vast area of land, Täby.
What is Runriket, you ask? It is an area just north of Stockholm where the battle stood between believers of the old Norse gods and the upstart Christians, resulting in the world’s largest concentration of runestones claiming ownership of the beautiful farmland around Lake Vallentuna.
Together with your very own raiding party (aka your private driver and guide), board your modern Viking vessel and set off on your journey to explore the heartland of Sweden’s Viking history. Visit the ruins of a great chieftain’s hall prominently displayed on a hill, complete with a magnificent runestone in his front yard carved directly into bedrock. Wander down the Vain Vikings of Runriket hall of fame, the road lined by runestones telling the stories of Estrid, her grandchild Jarlabanke and other people who lived in the area over 1000 years ago.
As we leave Lake Vallentuna, Jarlabanke and the other vain Vikings behind, you will probably wonder how 1000 years can feel so close.
