It doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from; everyone knows what a candy cane is. However, few people know that the candy cane is a Swedish invention. Bake some of your own in our Swedish Candy Cane Making Class!
The story about the tour
In the mid-19th century, widow Amalia Eriksson returned from work to find her daughter Ida coming down with a cold. Amalia, who was a resourceful woman as well as the owner of a small bakery and candy shop, rushed to the pharmacy and bought a small bottle of peppermint oil. By mixing sugar, water and vinegar and adding a few drops of the expensive oil she tried to make Ida some home made cough drops – it was intended as medicine. However, such tasty medicine soon found its way to the candy shop, and today, the red and white candy cane is sold all across the world.
Baking candy cane, polkagrisar in Swedish, looks much easier than it is. However, it is a fun, family friendly and delicious way to be introduced to Sweden. In our Swedish Candy Cane Making Class you will get a brief introduction to the history of the candy cane as well as an instruction how to bake from your professional polkagris coach. Then it is time to get your hands dirty – it is time to start baking. The best thing of all – you get to keep everything you bake! Yum!
