Wondered why the Danes are dubbed as the happiest people on earth? Visit Copenhagen during Christmas, and you’ll understand why. The Danes are experts in making this dark and cold month the most joyful time of the year with their jaw-dropping Christmas decorations and lights. Besides that, there are a bunch of other things you can’t miss while you’re in Copenhagen. Good thing we made a list!
Most “Christmassy” places
At the end of the famous shopping street Strøget, you’ll find the beautifully decorated hotel D’Angleterre. Each year, the facade is decorated in a new, creative theme. Previous themes have been a real-life Christmas calendar and different stories by H.C. Andersen.
One of the great things about Copenhagen is that the Danes have sprinkled Christmas all over the city, making it feel like the entire city is a big Christmas market. You won’t have to walk far until you find a square with a huge Christmas tree, cute Christmas markets and decorative lights. Two of our favourite squares are Kongens Nytorv and Rådhuspladsen.
At the impressive amusement park called Tivoli, you are guaranteed a memorable Christmas experience. This magical Christmas market is decorated with thousands of glittering lights and has around 60 different stalls that offer crafts, snacks, sweets, and hot drinks to keep you warm.
Nyhavn’s Christmas Market
This cosy Christmas market is located alongside the charming area of Nyhavn in the city centre. Walk from stall to stall on the cobbled streets and enjoy the picturesque environment while sipping on some hot mulled wine. A must if you’re in town!
Get cultural at the Royal Danish Theatre
Looking for the ultimate Christmas experience? At the Danish Royal Theatre, you’ll find impressive ballets, operas and musicals. One of our favourites is the classic ballet The Nutcracker. This magical performance will, without a doubt, enchant you and get you in the Christmas spirit.
What’s Christmas without ice skating? We’re not sure. Every winter, the entrance to the Frederiksberg Garden is transformed into a big ice skating rink for everyone to enjoy. If you forgot to bring your skates with you, you can just rent a pair there. Perfect!
