Sigtuna & Drottningholm Palace

There’s more to Sweden than Stockholm! See the country(side) you imagined, from the King’s residence to Sweden’s first town. Our Sigtuna & Drottningholm Palace Private Driving Tour takes us for an adventure, local style.

The story about the tour

Leave the city’s stress behind and head to the Swedish countryside, where rolling hills, farm pastures and the city suburbs welcome you. Go from rural to royal and get the chance to see both Sigtuna, Sweden’s oldest preserved town and Drottningholm Palace, home of the Swedish King & Queen.

Close your eyes and travel back in time to a town founded long, long ago… in AD 980, to be exact. You see townspeople loading and unloading goods from their boats, the smell of cattle floating through the air, and the sound of the mint masters’ tools clinking and clanking away, producing the land’s first coins. Welcome to Sigtuna, the first town of the Swedish Kingdom, founded by the great Viking King Erik the Victorious (it’s all in his name, see?!). Wander the streets like the Vikings, preach to the church ruins like the priest did in the old times and poke your head into the inner courtyard of one of the charming wooden houses along the main street. A good place to enjoy some traditional Swedish “Fika” at the café during some free time!

We continue from the rural to the royal and leave this pocket-sized town behind. Headed for Drottningholm, it’s where we find a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a palace and a Swedish Royal home. Not only is this 400-year-old palace one of the ten palaces that the Royal Family of Sweden have at their disposal, but it’s also located on the shore of Lake Mälaren (just like Sigtuna!) and has a gigantic “backyard”. Why is it inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list? Come journey with us to find out! Palace, playhouse and pavilion altogether make this a one-of-a-kind site.

Take the smell of cinnamon buns, the freshwater of Lake Mälaren and countryside air back to the city as we make for Stockholm. Doesn’t the Swedish countryside sound wonderful?

Happy Nobel Day! 💡 As Nobel Week was cancelled in 2020, Nobel lectures, prizes and banquets were replaced with Nobel Week Lights - light installations inspired by Nobel Prize-awarded findings and laureates. As the festivities are now back, we sure hope that we are so lucky that the artwork brightening up the city during the darkest month of the year; is a December tradition that has come to stay. 💫

🇸🇪

It’s a contested issue amongst numerous Baltic connected countries as to who invented the Ice-skate. Was it the Finns or the Dutch? All of this is irrelevant because the best city to ice-skate in is Stockholm. If you want to show off your Quadruple Axel in front of the masses, the ice-rink in Kungsträdgården is the perfect location. ✨⛸️✨

Don't let its controversy cloud your curiosity as Christianshavns characteristic slanting roofs and canals, as well as the tremendous Church of Our Saviour, are well worth seeing. Not to forget the Færgecafé or Café Parterre who are both worth visiting.
