Opening hours in Stockholm during Christmas

Coming to Stockholm this Christmas? Here’s what you need about opening hours in Stockholm during Christmas.

Regardless if you’re one of those who hates early Christmas decorations or love them, Christmas will sooner or later be here. If you have a vacation planned to Stockholm, we thought we’d help and give you some hints on what’s open or not during this time of year. Yes, we know, we are too kind!

When it comes to restaurants, many of them are actually open on Christmas Eve (celebrated on 24th of December in Sweden). Especially those restaurants that happen to be located at hotels. Other restaurants might be open for some time, for example 21.00 – 03.00, or from 11.00 – 16.00. The easiest thing to do is to look up a restaurant you want to try and call them and ask.

If you want to buy alcohol and take to your hotel/airbnb-apartment/wherever you’re staying, you need to do so before the 24th. Sweden’s monopoly on alcohol – Systembolaget – is closed during the 24th, 25th and 26th of December. Yup…

Panic over last minute gifts will not be a problem, since most stores are open until 14.00 on Christmas.

If you want to go out and meet people on a bar, it’s best to do so on December 25th. This tradition originates from the term ‘hemvändarkväll’, which refers to the many people who’s coming home for Christmas and choose to go out on Christmas Day (25th) to meet old friends. This tradition has spread to most cities in Sweden. Even though people might not be one of those who emigrated, they still go out. Because it’s fun.
