It doesn’t matter who you are and where you’re from, everyone knows what a candy cane is. However, not many people know that the candy cane, the Polkagris, is a Swedish invention. Take the chance to bake some of your own!
The story about the tour
In the 18th century, widow Amalia Eriksson found her daughter Ida coming down with a cold. Amalia, who was a creative woman, rushed to the pharmacy and bought a small bottle of peppermint oil. By mixing sugar, water and vinegar and adding a few drops of peppermint oil she tried to make Ida some home made cough drops – it was intended as a medicine. Today, the candy cane is sold all across the world.
Baking “Polkagrisar” looks much easier than it is and it is a fun and delicious way to be introduced to Sweden. After a brief history lesson from the Polkapojkarna’s professional polkagris bakers it is time get your hands dirty – it is time to start baking. The best thing of all – you get to keep everything you bake! Yum!
